Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
