The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
