British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
