Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response

Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
